The Inner Critic, Part I

Have you ever heard a voice that tells you, “you are ugly”, “you’re stupid”, “you’re too fat”, etc.? The inner critic is a subpersonality that constantly judges your every action, appearance, feelings, or sense of self. It believes your inherent value is dependent on good behavior or doing something for someone else. You know when the inner critic is speaking when it belittles you with negative thoughts such as "you’re not good enough," "what’s wrong with you," or "you can’t do anything right,".

We all have an inner critic. No one can escape the voice that.  Interestingly, our inner critic originated from a place of love. We all want our parents or caregivers to love us and thus we learn that if we do what they want they will give us the love we crave. Have you heard, “be a good boy, and take care of your little sister” or “be a good girl and do as you are told”? To be “good” and worthy of love  you needed to follow their order.  This is transactional love or conditional love. Unconsciously, you developed a cue or internal message when you are feeling less than as a way to prepare yourself to adhere to an external way to feel loved and wanted.

Would you be willing to become aware or notice when you feel less than? It is a great step to take in making yourself less vulnerable to questioning your internal worth.
