Resilience

Resilience

What is resilience? Have you heard others speak about not being flexible enough or not being tough enough? Resilience is the ability to withstand or be unaffected by obstacles.

Life is difficult. Being human is hard and no person moves through life without challenges. In recent decades researchers have been studying why one person can recover more quickly or not be as affected than another when they have experienced the same trauma. Such as, both Mary and Mike witnessed a terrible traffic accident but Mary was able to process and integrate the experience faster into their everyday life and thus, returning to normal life more quickly. Resilience is like armor for your mental and spiritual health. It doesn’t stop someone from hurtful/harmful events but gives you a layer of protection so the hurt doesn’t go as deep.

This knowledge is important because we have the ability to strengthen our own resilience like airbags that go off to protect our head in a car crash. One way we gain resilience is by setting goals and achieving them. This builds confidence and trust in one’s self ability and worth.

Let’s discuss additional ways to improve resilience next week.

Please share what goals you have set for yourself, how you achieved them, and what you learned about yourself.
