Resilience: Goal Setting

Updated: Sep 25

Second thought… Before we move into additional ways to build resilience let’s further discuss goal setting. I believe this is important because we tend to get over ambitious with goals and then find we don’t have the ability to change behavior patterns right away.

For example, if you want to learn an instrument, which is more effective to achieve that goal?  Is is better to practice two hours once a week or 15 minutes daily?

Even though the total practice time of 2 hours (120 min) per week is greater than 15 minutes a day for 7 days (105 min), the better path to achieve the goal of learning an instrument is the 15 minutes a day. Why is that? First by practicing a little bit each day you are better at reinforcing new neural-pathways. By slowing down, doing a little bit each day, the new muscles and skills you are learning are becoming stronger, faster.

Additionally, is it easier to remember to complete a task if you do it each day or once a week? I know I am more likely to forget to do something if there are 6 days in between. You? Inevitably, something will come up, be more pressing, and seem more important than meeting my goal.

I’m curious, when you learned to speak, write, swim, or even use the bathroom, did you practice it once a week or at small intervals during the day, every day? Was it more fun?

Tell me more about how you best learn?
