Resilience: Final Thoughts

Writer's picture: Jennifer EdwardsJennifer Edwards

Developing resilience is not easy (as indicated by the many blog entries on this topic) and I’m sure I didn’t exhaust all sorts of details surrounding it. It takes time and discipline to remember to put off instant gratification and choose a more difficult way to live. Fortunately, the payoff is more than tenfold.

Resilience builds self-confidence proving to yourself that you can achieve anything you put your mind to. Celebrating the small achievements along the way helps to build a sense of competence and mastery. Additionally, reflecting on past successes and how you’ve overcome previous challenges encourages you to keep going.

Remember to be kind to yourself. Change is difficult and we were never meant to live life alone. Don’t hesitate to go to therapy or participate in a group. Not only do they provide tools and strategies for building resilience, you build a support group to cheer you on,  lift you up when you are feeling low, and celebrate with you. Therapists and counselors are unbiased. They have no opinion other than to empower you to become the best version of yourself (according to your definition of success), and help you to recognize the strengths already within you.

I hope practicing resilience becomes an everyday habit like brushing your teeth two times a day and brushing your hair.
