How Do You Serve?

Updated: Jul 4

One of my managers once said, “My job is to make your job easier.” To me, that was profound. I had never had a manager say that nor provide such clarity and direction to do my job well. Prior to her, I was often met with a sense of apathy or vagueness. The lack of clarity made it difficult to serve, causing me frustration and anxiety. Additionally, living in the shadows of uncertainty or fuzziness is exhausting. Thus, I love Julie’s approach, “You can’t serve people you don’t invite to the table”.

This is why Julie meets with survivors often to make sure Miss Julie’s School of Beauty is everything they want and need it to be. Many times people, organizations, managers steam ahead with ideas but never listen to the people they want to serve. Then, not only does the organization suffer but most importantly the people you intend to provide outcomes to are left feeling unheard, unseen, and forgotten.

Listening and engaging in meaningful conversation is difficult. It is often uncomfortable and time consuming. It means putting aside your assumptions, and showing up with a mindset of openness, generosity, and humility. I challenge you as I challenge myself, “How do I approach my relationships? Whether personal, social, or professional, do I serve with the intention to meet others’ needs or myself?”
